The Week In Review
Can it really be called a vacation if you don’t visit a theme park?
Headed north last Friday with the kids. DC on Friday night to see the Evening Parade at Marine Barracks 8th and I. I have seen the event before but it never fails to impress. A nearly impossible ticket, it is worth your time and effort if you are going to be in DC on a summer Friday night. The Marine Band, Drum and Bugle Corps and Silent Drill team all perform and pass in review. Outstanding.
Then we went to Long Island to visit grandma and friends. We also visited the grave of my father at Calverton National Cemetery. If you visit a national cemetery on Memorial Day allow ample time! It always saddens me to see the headstones row upon row but there is something inspiring about it too. And on this visit each grave marked with an American flag.
On Tuesday we went to Fleet Week in NYC and visited the USS Iwo Jima. Of course, that one brought back some memories. Though the Iwo Jima I sailed on is long since retired – this one is quite a vessel.
Then on to PA to visit by brother.
And over the course of the week I turned on my computer three times and we never set foot in a theme park! You get the point. We don’t need fancy (read that as pricey) diversions to create memories. We did it the past week with family, friends and the United States Marines. I encourage you to do the same.
"Your energetic speaking style and well-polished presentation captured the attention of the entire audience of nearly 300 Coast Guard personnel...Your familiarity with the Coast Guard and our missions was evident, as you incorporated service history and factual information in your presentation... Your sincere, heartfelt presentation certainly contributed to the overall readiness of this command. Thanks again!"
