Tech toys and tools
USA Today tells us that older folks are into tech toys too. In fact, there is a growing body of research that says these gadgets (ranging from a Wii to the basic cell phone) can help them stay sharp. I would add that I don’t think this is limited to seniors.
When I was writing my book, No Yelling, I stopped reading books on business and leadership. I didn’t want my work to be derivative from those other works I was reading. I wanted it to be as original as possible. So, I got out of the habit of reading books. I still read all the magazines and trade publications but not books. I knew I needed to get back to that but I was having a hard time reconnecting to my old, better behavior. Then Santa gave me an E-book reader.
My E-book reader (there are a few on the market) is about 4 x 6 x 1/2 inch. In other words, it is very easy to carry along. So, I downloaded a few books and am getting the hang of it. I know it is the novelty of the thing that is getting me to read again but I am reading again and I like that. It is so easy to carry in my briefcase and flip open on a plane or at a restaurant.
Sometimes we need something to jump start a change in our behavior. Maybe a new pair of sneakers to get started working out, maybe a new healthy cookbook to change your diet, maybe reading something will cause you to try something new.
It is still early in the year. It isn’t too late to get started on that change you have been thinking about. You know you need to do it. Get started. I am gaining momentum on some of my 2009 initiatives and everyday brings me closer to making my new behavior a habit – a good habit.
Thanks Santa for reconnecting me with books.
"What can I say…. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! You were definitely a big hit, as I knew you would be. I will highly recommend you for other speaking engagements and for other chapter events."
