On Feb 21 (22,24) HBO will air Taking Chance. This film is based on the true story of Lt Col USMC Kevin Strobl as he escorts the body of fallen Marine PFC Chance Phelps home to Wyoming.

Of course, I haven’t seen it but I have seen several reviews and all agree that Kevin Bacon excels in the role of Lt Col Strobl (who advised on the film). Be warned that the film will take you through the range of emotions from pride to frustration to sadness and pride again as you see the actions of “ordinary Americans” over the course of his journey home.

I am asked all the time how to recognize and acknowledge the sacrifices of our servicemembers. A nod, a handshake, a meal are all easy ways to do this. Now, mark your calendar, sit back and watch a movie. Be prepared – know it will stir emotions. And also, know you are guarded by the best warriors in the world.
