Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll…and a pat on the back
Did you see the study released the other day that said young people prefer praise to sex and money?
It seems a boost in self-esteem is highly desirable to college kids. Of course, this is highly desirable to all people but to this generation it matters more. This is the self-esteem (everybody gets a trophy) generation. They have been raised with high expectations about achievement and doing well. Unfortunately, this can lead to a sense of entitlement (as many of you lament) but it also provides us an opportunity to cheaply meet a need of our people.
While self-esteem is often misunderstood we cannot deny that all human beings want to have positive emotions about themselves. In fact, in some assessments we conduct at FireStarter we are able to measure this and higher performers generally have higer self-esteem.
Go ahead, say they did a good job – if they did.
