Peanuts, ethics and eggs

It’s like deja vu all over again.

A while back we talked about the peanut butter factory that knowingly cranked out peanut butter with salmonella.

Today, it is the egg guy.

The Iowa egg farm at the center of a massive salmonella outbreak received hundreds of positive results for salmonella in the two years before its eggs sickened more than 1,500 people, congressional investigators said Tuesday.

It would appear that ethics, integrity and public safety are not important for the owner of Wright County Egg, Austin “Jack” DeCoster. He has been fined before. DeCoster is no stranger to tangling with the government. He has paid millions of dollars in state and federal fines over the years for health, safety, immigration and environmental violations at his farms.

I know Decoster is not representative of the egg industry but he is cause for concern. I am sure there are people working for him who wanted to do the right thing but were beaten down (one way or another) and they finally gave up trying to do what is right.

We are all human. We all have bad days and don’t always live up to the lofty standards of life. But there are sins of omission and sins of commission.

If you are reading this I know you are not a Decoster type of person but be reminded to be ever vigilant and strive for the higher standard. You will be happy you did.
