My golf lesson – and yours.
My regular readers know that I comment on my golf game from time to time. Last year it was not withdrawing from the club championship. This year…………
Well, I have new clubs and I have only just started playing with any regularity so I should be finding my groove. I haven’t found it yet. In fact, I snagged a lesson with the pro yesterday afternoon because I played so poorly yesterday morning.
As is often the case, he pointed out a few things. Gave me a few things to think about and I played better today. Not quite there but certainly on track.
Of course, this isn’t about my golf game. It is about all of us and our occasional need for coaching or just a different perspective. As a consultant, like a golf pro, I see things the client might not be seeing. Your peers know you and are seeing things too.
Even when I am hitting the ball well I want to get better and I will get a lesson. How about you? Do you continue to work to get better even when things are going well? Perhaps more important, do you ask for help? Do you go out of your way to get feedback and input that you can use to improve your performance?
The best players (think Tiger Woods) continue to practice and get feedback from a coach or confidante. Our work lives are no different. We can be better when we seek feedback and ask for advice, when appropriate.
When is the last time you asked someone, “How am I doing?”
“Great information! Practical thoughts I can take back and actually use with my people at all levels of the company.”
