Four Days In July

If you follow golf you can answer this question with ease…

Where were you in 2009 when Tom Watson made his brilliant charge at Turnberry? I was at the National Speakers Association national convention in Arizona with my daughter – who was getting into golf – and it was wonderful. I remember it all so well, as many of you do.

The incredible thing is, we remember it so well yet he did not win. It wasn’t a win for the ages it was a place….Yet we remember it. He missed one putt on the 72nd hole to fall into a tie and the rest is, well, history….

The author of the book is Jim Huber. The title is Four Days In July. Jack Nicklaus says the book is for all who appreciate the game and its history. He is right.

Last month I talked of the youth of those in the hunt at the Masters and challenged you to not overlook youth. Some are gifted and can do the job….today..the opposite. Must we retire people simply because they reach a certain age? Your challenge is to help them compete in the new era with the new tools and to give them a chance.

Truth is not all will make the cut. At some point we must make room for youth but not at the expense of a tenured employee who is still getting it done. Tom Watson got it done that weekend.
