ACE is not the place

The local ACE hardware is going out of business. It really isn’t tough to figure. Despite a killer location in a solid demographic area with no big box home improvement stores in the immediate area – it is now closing. Why? Poor service.

A few weeks ago my neighbor rented an aerator for the lawn. After using it for a few minutes the chain fell off. He put the chain back on and it fell off again, and again. He took the machine back. Clearly it was not working right and he was unable to complete the job.

The store wanted to charge him for use AND keep the money he put up as a security/damage deposit. Essentially, they said he broke it. Of course, this led to a pointed conversation. They didn’t keep the deposit but did charge the rental fee. You see the problem here.

Now they are out of business. Treat your customers like dirt and you will have no customers at all.

Astonishing, isn't it? That an organization in business today can miss that simple truth. I tell myself every time I go into a CVS or Sears store that I will never go back thanks to the indifference and incompetence of their people. The trouble is, I support them by going in because it is more convenient to me. I guess I am enabling.

We were discussing this morning the difference between the restaurant where we had our holiday party on Saturday and another where a group dined in October. Saturday evening, a multiple course dinner was served for 105 people, and every dish arrived at every place at very nearly the same moment- all were hot and delicious.

In October, at a highly regarded resort in North Carolina, we were told that our group had to be divided because they couldn't serve more than 12 of us at a time. One of those places I can guarantee I will return to. The other… probably not.
