Not exactly a news flash here but employees who are in shape are better employees. The National Committee on Quality Assurance found that workers who are healthy and feel good about themselves are less likely to miss work.

We know that absenteeism costs money and we know that happy and healthy employees are more engaged and do better work. But what do we do to help them get that way. There are precious few firms that invest money and energy in creating wellness programs and providing opportunities for employees get fit. Is it worth really worth it? Consulting firm Watson Wyatt estimates that every dollar a firm spends on preventiv care saves about $2 to $3 in medical costs over the long term. This cost is just the cost of health care, it doesn’t factor in the costs of absenteeism and decreased production, so the benefits are higher.

I have listened to our fitness guru here at FireStarter speak to many of our clients and it is impressive to see the interest employees have in this issue. They want information. Mike Neller is a former Navy Captain who is passionate about healthy living. He has made an impact on me.

What are you doing in your life, your family, your business etc to make healthy choices and to set a good example for others who are watching you? Do you always have donuts at the morning meeting or can you make some changes to the menu?

This is one of those things we KNOW we need to do but life presents challenges. I battle each day to eat correctly and I don’t always get it right but I keep trying. I hope you will also.
