The new rules of the game of life

I had a nice conversation with the guy driving the Hertz bus in Denver the other day. He is 61, quite articulate and in decent shape. After he is done with his shift at Hertz he goes over to Enterprise and drives for them. It is what he said next that bothered me. He said, “that’s just how it is in America today to make ends meet. My 401k is a 101k so I have to work two jobs.”

Of course, I have no idea what happened in this guys life before I met him but the fact that he was resigned to, even accepting of, the fact that working two jobs is what it takes in America today was not OK with me.

Folks, the American dream is in jeopardy. For the first time in our history it is uncertain if our kids will have it better than us. That steadily increasing standard of living and quality of life is no longer guaranteed. Not to say we are doomed but we need to do something different. The global economy, the internet, the environment, the long war on terrorism, you name it…things are different today.

What set of rules are you playing by? If you are not facing forward with eyes wide open you are in for a jolt. Yes, the greed of the last decade got us where we are today but the changes I mentioned are not about our mortgage issues, they are about a new world order with a new set of rules. Do you have a playbook for the game we are in today?

"I have attended quite a few leadership seminars, and have tried to gather and relate things from each of them, but yours hit all 3 of us with material that relates and for myself commands an internal level of accountability and responsibility in what I do at our company. "
