What Reading Does For The Mind

In case you have any doubts about the power of reading I suggest you check out a paper by Cunningham and Stanovich called, What Reading Does For The Mind. Let me give you some highlights.

It confirms that reading increases vocabulary, boosts general knowledge and helps keep memory intact as we age. Probably no surprises there but the proof and data in the article are interesting. They talk about rare words (words that don’t get used every day) and where you would find them. Children’s books contain more rare words than TV and more than a conversation between two adult college graduates! In other words, we don’t speak with a high degree of complexity and rarity. I guess that would be too hard but when we read we encounter words we don’t normally encounter and we get smarter along the way

"I want to personally thank you for helping to make NJCUL’s Leadership Conference such a huge success. Your presentations were full of relevant information and very well received. From that first meeting in Baltimore last year, I knew you would be great – and you were!"
