A thick skin and an open mind

The pace of last week continued for five days. Tiring but powerful. One of the best lessons was the value of a clear objective. Every attendee was working towards a single goal. Of course, many of them were working on smaller parts of the project but they will all add up down the road to yield a successful result.

This past week was all about status checks and progress reviews. Teams that have been refining concepts for a year presented their latest version to a group of evaluators. Everything is pretty much on track but each group got pointed feedback on how to make their part even better. This required a thick skin and an open mind. Some of the feedback was objective and some was subjective but each team took it and will work with it. Nobody rejected the feedback because they are all focused on the long term success of the whole not the short term looking good of their part.

How often do we defend our position rather than listen for the nugget that will make our idea even better? We all think we know best, often we do, but not always.
