Keeping em informed will keep em motivated

A recent survey has found that employers in Quebec still have some way to go in terms of communicating with their employees.

The CROP survey conducted on behalf of the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés found that almost 25% of employees aren’t aware of their organization’s objectives. This percentage rises to 40% among less educated workers and 39% among lower-income households.

A further 32% of respondents report that they weren’t informed about their personal objectives within the organization in the past year. However, 74% of higher educated workers said they were familiar with the personal goals their employer had set for them.

The survey also found that employees who are familiar with their organization’s objectives tend to be more motivated to give their very best (92%) than those who aren’t aware of them (83%). A similar trend was observed among respondents who knew their personal objectives (95%) compared to those who haven’t been informed or who work in an organization where personal objectives haven’t been set (81%).
“As these findings show, there is a direct link between employees’ motivation and employers’ communicating their expectations,” says Florent Francoeur, Ordre president and CEO. “Unfortunately, objectives are too often only shared with senior management or in large corporations. Yet communicating objectives has a direct impact on motivation and productivity, no mater what the size of the organization.”

My experience shows that Quebec and the rest of North America are the same on this issue.

"As a result of the session you delivered to my group, using “No Yelling” as the guide we have experienced an exceptional start to our 2009 construction season. Safety as usual is paramount, and our production rates have exceeded even my high expectations. There has been a positive shift in ownership from all that attended, which leads me to believe we could have the same success if we did the same kind of training with our front line labor force."
