Trip of a Lifetime…

I just got back from the Queen Charlotte Islands off the northwest coast of Canada (54 degrees north, 133 degrees west). We were 30 miles from the Alaska border. This was one of those business/pleasure trips that happen once in awhile. We were to go sport fishing for Salmon. As you can imagine the four or five people on boat often catch 50 fish in a day. If I had a bucket list a trip like this would be on it. Yeah, well. It was windy. Real windy. We are talking gale force advisory windy which means we didn’t leave port on day two and three and were only out for a few hours on day one.

For a while I was disappointed. I really was but we went to plan B on Saturday and plan C on Sunday. One of the highlights was seeing a Bald Eagle in the wild. Actually, that isn’t true. I didn’t see one I saw nine soaring and diving for fish. Very cool. Learning about the history of the place and the geography was interesting too. And spending quality time with professional associates is always time well spent.

How often do we get our hopes up and sights set on something and then it doesn’t happen and we are left with disappointment? It happens to all of us. The real question is do you get over it, as I was able to do, or do you focus on the negative?

Professional speaker W Mitchell tells of first being burned in a vehicle crash and four years later being paralyzed from the waist down in a plane crash. He goes on to say that before the crash there were 10,000 things he could look forward to doing, after the crash it was 9000 and he chooses to focus on what he can do not what he can’t do.

What do you focus on?
