Negative Thinking

The last few days my golf game has been poor. Really poor. This is frustrating since prior to that it was really coming around. A buddy suggested I read Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect by noted sports psychologist, Dr. Bob Rotella.

It is a good read and it actually has applications beyond golf. One of my favorite lines from the book is this – negative thinking is almost 100% effective.

The opposite is not true. Positive thinking is not ineffective nor is positive thinking ineffective, positive thinking gives you a better chance of something good happening. Negative thinking on the other hand creates a picture of BAD in our mind and then we often figure out a way (consciously or subconsciously) to make it happen.

If you think a conversation with an employee is going to get difficult it probably will. You have already programmed yourself for that outcome and may steer the conversation in that direction by not doing the things you might to prevent it from getting there.

Trying to lose weight but have had challenges in the past. OK, why bother you tell yourself, it is too hard, and you gain weight.

And the golf shot. You tell yourself to not hit the ball in the water but the mind only hears the water part – splash.

These are things we know but our society, and people around us, loves to go negative. Don’t go there.

Stay Inspired.
