Huddle Up!

One of the best tools you have in your leadership toolbox is the team meeting. Call it a pre-shift meeting, a daily huddle, a tailgate talk, or whatever but the moments before the shift or the workday are the best time to get everyone aligned and focused on the day.

I took this picture this morning with my cellphone so it isnt as good as it might be..but across the way under the awning at the center of the building you see a number of people in blue shirts. The staff was gathered ’round as the supervisor got them started on the day.

This picture is from The Sanctuary at Kiawah, a five star resort (I Love my job!!) but I have seen this technique used with success at the local McDonalds and you can use it too.

As an employee of a company that uses the "huddle" I can attest to its usefulness. Our company does a cheer created by the employees and specific to each store location. It definitely does its job of getting us all going, getting the energy level up, getting us focused on the day and why we're there, and pulling us all together as a team before heading out to greet the public.

The huddle is also a wonderful way to make sure all the employees receive the same information at the same time. It allows for questions and clarification therefore preventing misunderstandings and miscommunications later.

Great comment Michelle. It is great to hear that the technique continues to work.

"As a result of the session you delivered to my group, using “No Yelling” as the guide we have experienced an exceptional start to our 2009 construction season. Safety as usual is paramount, and our production rates have exceeded even my high expectations. There has been a positive shift in ownership from all that attended, which leads me to believe we could have the same success if we did the same kind of training with our front line labor force."
