I know companies that struggle with this in China.They want to raise the quality of life for these workers, but if you tell them "no, you can only work 10 hours a day here", they'll go find another job to fill in another 6 hours, even though the 10 hour/day job is paying far above a living wage and raising their standard of living. Their culture doesn't have much of a concept of "personal time".

As I understand it, you are pretty much correct about the need for precise placement. For any given observation the correlator needs to know exactly where each dish is. Part of the calibration procedure takes care of this. I think (but am not sure) that they look at a known signal, use that for calibration, and then look at the target. The precision necessary is going to be a function of the wavelength being observed (mm and sub-mm in this case). But I don't know exactly what that function is.
