Most of us do try pretty hard. The problem is, there are simply lots of things that we don't have any control over. At least with AT&T Wireless, we can only help with questions about phones, plans, features, and the ordering process, pretty much. We don't have account information. So when someone comes in complaining that they are getting overcharged or something else is wrong with their account, we can only be nice and point people to someone who can help them.Also, you have no idea how many people pop in with stuff like "i want a free iphone" or "i love you!!!!!" or "***** AT&T!!!!". Saturday nights are the worst, when all the drunk people log on just to ***** with us with ridiculous names.This is what inspires a person to a life of misanthropy.

Heh, the "per person" argument misses corporate taxes and factors in payroll taxes that don't exist.It averages to $40b per year. 40 billion. That's not a lot of money compared to trillion or so we budget every single year. Put it in some perspective.And it's not like we're throwing that money away, we'd be spending it within an economy that can return it in the form of taxes and increased science, research and tech job growth.
