A friend of mine has severe chronic Lyme disease, which has progressed so much that he recently had a seizure. He's been pretty desperate for help, and has been seeing a bunch of doctors who have prescribed him some sort of drug cocktail... He recently sent me this link to a state bill. If passed it would create a research facility specifically for Lyme disease and other related emerging/unknown diseases. The thing is, he was *against* it passing, as it was likely that his insurance company would then deny him coverage for his prescriptions as the cause of his condition would then be "unknown".So he now has 2 choices, but can't have both:- Allow research on it in order to *possibly* find a cure in who knows how many years- Stay with the mess of a drug cocktail and hope it worksSadly, issues like this have lead to things like this:http://www.nytimes.com/2001/06/17/magazine/17LYMED .../another-reason-we-need-healthcare-reform?
I'm digging you down because you didn't even bother to read the second sentence in the ***** article."According to the complaint, on June 22, 2004, Michelle Williams of Lynwood, Illinois, applied for a life insurance policy on her own life and named her mother, plaintiff Kathryn Depratto, as the beneficiary."The victim took out the policy on her OWN life. If you want to argue that insurance companies are rightfully wary of payouts to families of murder victims, fine, but don't try to dump this on the mother. Furthermore, if they wanted to include a provision that voided the policy if the policyholder was murdered, they very well could have included that rule. They didn't, so it's just weaseling at this point. "Insufficient proof" my ass. |

Good for him. Good kid with huge potential when he was drafted, overcoming anxiety issues to realize that potential. It's tough to argue against King Felix's numbers, but given Greinke's supporting cast, I do believe he certainly earned this.

So getting Americans to be against China will make it OK to not pay China back? I don't get that, but then again, you might be trolling.

I did not actually watch the video, since I was there live, but I completely agree with Azdiak on the point that there is no clear feedback system on the mural ads as with the regular inline ads. I concede that point. The problem, I believe, is that we are all so conditioned at this point at "free" ***** on the internet that many people do not understand that it takes tremendous amounts of time, energy and effort to deliver all of that data for free, and instead end up feeling entitled to these services. I don't have anything for or against this particular ad Digg runs, cause I can just shrink my browser and it magically disappears, but I do have a problem with the general attitude towards ads on sites.I, personally hate 99.99999% of ads out there since they are 1) unimaginative and 2) trying to get me to buy ***** that I can guarantee I do not need, but...they are a necessary evil. Why is it that we can tolerate ads on TV that literally interrupt your watching experience every 3 minutes, usually with a creepy guy talking about ***** pills, but be so up in arms over a background image.aetherboy, you are the perfect example of this trend. Instead of conceding that it is in the best interest of everyone to keep improving Digg, especially for us users, you take the stance that there are always people who will take their place. The truth is, you are right up to a certain point. There are always a 1000 startups looking to take down the giant, but if Digg fails because users migrate to another site without ads, that site will eventually need to start generating funds and will eventually start selling ads as well and the cycle will repeat until VC's will no longer fund these types of sites and they die off or they start charging for content. As my old physics professor used to say, "there is no such thing as a free lunch".I do really want to get a dialogue going on this subject, so can I steer it towards alternate funding schemes for the web.PS. I love this commentary by Louis CK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOtEQB-9tvk |
